Cortina d' Ampezzo
Cortina d'Ampezzo is an Italian town in the southern Dolomitic Alps, in the province of Belluno, in the Veneto region. Completely surrounded by the Dolomites, it is a very popular and famous winter sport resort, that even hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics. Cortina was also featured in many movies, including the Pink Panther, as well as James Bond's For Your Eyes only. The most famous mountains of the area are Tofane to the west, Pomagagnon to the north, Cristallo to the northeast, Faloria and Sorapis to the east, and Becco di Mezzodì, Croda da Lago and Cinque Torri to the south. The weather here is typically alpine, with long winters and short summers. The city center, located at an elevation of 1,224 meters is home to some of the most prestigious fashion brands such as Gucci, Bulgari, and Benetton and various artisan shops, and antiquarians.
When you think of shopping in Cortina, however, you think of La Cooperativa di Cortina, a shopping center that was founded in 1893, where many kinds of stores are found. Piazza Venezia houses several popular spots such as the Ciasa de ra Regoles.
Cortina's fame comes from its beautiful landscapes. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, Cortina is considered a paradise for skiers, hikers, and climbers. There are many trails that take you to the most amazing places, such as the Lake Sorapis with its turquoise waters, or the trenches from World War 1, in the 5 Torri area. You can follow one of the many Ferrata routes: following a metal cable for safety, hikers move along spectacular mountain passages. There are hikes suitable for everyone, at all levels of difficulty. If walking or climbing is not your thing, you can always relax and suntan in one of the 56 refuges and restaurants of the area.
In winter Cortina d'Ampezzo offers a wide variety of slopes of every level of difficulty. Cortina is part of the Dolomiti Superski area, the world’s largest skiing carousel that links 12 top skiing resorts: with one skipass you have access to 450 lifts and 1220 kilometres of pistes and trails.
